I hear so many passing comments on ‘you must use this magnesium spray’, or ‘that magnesium supplement is the best’, that I thought it would be helpful to explain a little bit of the confusing and contradictory world of supplements that I have researched and wrote about since 1995, just to clarify matters a little.

Food supplements made from natural (rather than synthetic) food based ingredients, are called nutriceuticals. Nutri- from the word nutrition, and –ceutical from the word pharmaceutical, for the healing and balancing effect of food used as medicine. Nutriceuticals are recognized by the body as natural and therefore the absorption and bioavailability for cellular function would be better than that of synthetic (manufactured) supplements.

Nutriceuticals are taken on a daily basis complementary to a healthy diet, as an insurance policy to ensure optimal health and wellbeing.

The combination and synergy (co-operation) of vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients are more important than the quanti­ties of single micronutrients. Always take vita­mins and minerals with meals for better absorption. Take calcium and mag­nesium at night to ensure a better night’s sleep.
